OUR STORY

The Thanksgiving Hospital Legacy

The Home traces its roots to the Civil War era with the opening of the Thanksgiving Hospital, founded in 1868 post-Civil War, symbolizing gratitude. In 1928, significant changes unfolded: patient care moved to what is now Bassett Healthcare, while the establishment transitioned into a retirement home. To honor Judge Ulysses Welch and his wife's patronage, it was renamed The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home. This pivotal year marked a new chapter, blending gratitude with dedication to serving the elderly in our community.

Generous support enabled the construction of a new facility, commemorated in April 2004 with a Gala Re-dedication. Today, residents, families, and staff enjoy the stately yet modern Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

Our Mission

The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home is dedicated to the principle that as we age, we are entitled to personal attention, specialized care, and, above all, the opportunity to continue our lives with dignity and meaning.
